Market - San Jose, CA
Originally a 100-year-old produce warehouse constructed of timber and concrete, with iconic sawtooth clerestories that diffuse natural light, this former packing facility for nearby orchards has been transformed into a vibrant community destination. The design extends the historic loading dock, reclaiming the front parking lot to create an elevated outdoor courtyard. Surrounded by greenery and protected from the busy street, the courtyard offers layers of planting and defined spaces for dining, beer halls, and play, inviting visitors to linger and connect.
Inside, we stripped away decades of buildup to reveal the warehouse’s authentic character, accentuating the diffuse light from the clerestories and restoring its raw beauty. This transformation balances preservation and innovation, turning the industrial structure into a lively market for shopping, food, and drinks—a place to gather, celebrate, and enjoy both indoor and outdoor experiences.
Acting as a catalyst for change, the project anchors the neighborhood and sets the stage for a pedestrian-friendly, human-scaled oasis, inspiring a vibrant, walkable future.
